Austin spent the first decade of his career in the corporate world, starting with an engineering degree from UW-Platteville, that landed him a manufacturing engineering role at John Deere. That job took him to seven different countries, managing large-scale projects and learning the intricate systems—HVAC, electrical, and plumbing—that make up $30M + automated industrial paint systems. Later, as a facility manager for Rite Hite in Dubuque, he handled the complexities of managing commercial properties while finally getting the chance to plant roots back home.

On paper, he had the career he was supposed to want. But the more time he spent behind a desk and in meetings, the more he found himself looking toward the job site. He realized that he didn't want to manage spreadsheets; he wanted to build things that last.

He eventually decided to trade the corporate office for a construction site. He chose the freedom of working for himself and the honest satisfaction that comes from manual craftsmanship. To bridge the gap between engineering and construction, he joined Heacock and Sons Construction, where he spent his time learning the nuances of custom home building and the discipline of finish carpentry.

Today, he owns and operates Dubuque Property Services and Solutions LLC. He still uses his engineering background to troubleshoot the unexpected and his project management experience to keep things on track, but the work itself is now a personal craft.

He made the switch because he believes there is a specific kind of value in local work and a job well done with your own two hands. Now, he uses that perspective to help his neighbors here in town take their home project ideas and make them a reality.
